Dr. Avi Wigderson, recipient of the 2023 A.M. Turing Award from the Association of Computing Machinery, has had a distinguished career spanning decades of groundbreaking contributions to computer science. In 2021, he was awarded the Abel Prize shared with László Lovász. In 2019, he published a book that is an invitation to the theory of computing, that is available for free online at https://www.math.ias.edu/avi/book/

Question of the Day

Is randomness a fundamental computational resource, or can every random algorithm eventually be replaced by a deterministic one?

Insight: Wigderson's work reveals a deep and surprising connection: if strong enough pseudorandom generators exist (which most complexity theorists believe), then randomness can always be removed. Randomness may be computationally powerful but not fundamentally necessary.
